'I love those guys’: Von Miller talks about playing former Broncos teammates in playoffs

DENVER (KDVR) — It's been a while since the Buffalo Bills and Denver Broncos faced each other in a playoff game, and one person on the field on Sunday will have played for both teams.
Von Miller is a linebacker for the Buffalo Bills, but in 2011, he was selected second overall by the Denver Broncos during the NFL draft. He was also named Super Bowl MVP in Super Bowl 50 —the last time the Broncos won the crowning game.
‘Totally dialed in’: Bo Nix’s barber reflects on quarterback’s pre-playoff demeanor
In 2011, Broncos legend John Elway said Miller was "a type of guy that comes around every 10 years," according to ESPN. He's been a renowned figure in Broncos history since his time on the team.
On Wednesday, Miller was asked how it felt to face his old team in the AFC playoffs.
"It's all love," he said. "I can't even start to play a delusion of this hatred or -- I can't even start to play that game."
He said that playing up any hatred would be a detriment to his playing style and the overall game.
"I love those guys," Miller said. "I love everything about the Denver Broncos. I pay close attention to the Denver Broncos. You know, I haven't even talked to Bo Nix or follow him on Instagram or nothing like that, but I feel like I know Bo Nix just by staying in touch with Broncos Country and staying in touch with the Broncos."
Miller said he's still close with Patrick Surtain II, Courtland Sutton and Garett Bolles, speaking with them at least once a month.
Broncos vs. Bills: What to watch for in Wildcard matchup
"Last month, we didn't even have the idea that we would be in a playoff game, playing against each other," Miller told reporters Wednesday. "When I'm on the phone with Garett Bolles, it doesn't feel like he's on Denver Broncos, I'm on Buffalo Bills — it feels like we're in a locker room, you know, catching up. It's all love and respect."
Broncos head coach Sean Payton also weighed in on Miller, specifically discussing the linebacker's strengths and weaknesses.
“You see his edge presence. Certainly, he does a great job with his arms. He can still bend. You have to be aware of when he’s on the field relative to what you’re wanting to do. I can remember him for all those years here," Payton told reporters on Wednesday.
"When you coach the Pro Bowl, we were playing an actual Pro Bowl game back then. We happened to be the staff for the NFC, and obviously, he was with the AFC. I don’t know what the financial difference is for the winners and losers, but back then, the fourth quarter, it would pick up a little bit because everyone had a hotel bill to pay," Payton laughed. "Certainly watching him play in that Pro Bowl, I’ll never forget it. I thought, ‘This guy has a big hotel room bill to pay,’ and we had problems blocking him, so you’ll never forget that. [He is an] elite player, [Pro Football] Hall-of-Fame type player.”
Rookie quarterback Bo Nix was also asked about Miller and the challenge he poses during Sunday's game.
Who are the Denver Broncos’ most famous fans?
"I know just from watching the Broncos back in the day, he was the contributor. [He was] the main player for that Super Bowl [50] team on defense and he made some great plays that day for the Super Bowl, but also that year," Nix said. "[He was] a great guy to have in this organization, but now he’s on the opposing team and now we have to face him. We know the strengths that he has, and they’re really talented up front, especially on the edge."
Nix called the Bills "athletic, rangy" and predicted they would try to disrupt the game.
"Just like all those other good players that we’ve played throughout the year with different edge guys, we just have to do our best to contain them and not let them just take over the game," Nix said.
