Winter Storm Watch in effect with a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain expected Friday midday through Saturday morning. AM Headlines: Cold Weather Advisory Winter Storm Watch Cold Temps Linger Next Week Discussion: Today is the calm before the (winter) storm with chilly but clear conditions for the area. A cold weather advisory remains in effect this morning for the mountains and eastern edge of the Piedmont. Temperatures are in the teens and 20s but it feels like 5-10 below zero with the wind chill in the mountains. Highs wil struggle to break out of the 30s this afternoon with temperatures falling into the teens and 20s tonight. A winter storm will impact the Carolinas starting late Friday morning beginning as snow and transitioning to a mix of sleet and freezing rain by Friday evening for areas near and south of I-85. Temperatures will be cold, but its the warmer nose edging into the upper level of the atmosphere that will cause the change to sleet and freezing rain south of I-85. This will lead to major travel problems because even a light glaze of ice could cause slippery conditions, but ice accumulations more than .25″ could bring down tree branches and cause power outages. The wintry weather will end before day break Saturday, outside of linger snow showers due to upslow flow in the mountains. Black ice will be a concern Saturday morning, but conditions will improve by Saturday afternoon with temps getting back into the low 40s. Temps will remain cold, but it will stay dry through early next week.
