BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- A man whose 3-year-old son got hold of an unlocked gun and accidentally shot his 6-year-old sister in the leg was sentenced Thursday. Ruben Guerra, 27, was sentenced to 96 days time served and four years of probation, and was ordered to attend a one-year child abuse treatment program. He pleaded no contest last month to two felonies: child cruelty and criminal storage of a firearm. New Year’s Day murder suspect admitted stabbing man: doc The shooting occurred the morning of Nov. 23 at an apartment in the 300 block of Roberts Lane after Guerra -- who works as a security guard -- left his gun on a dresser in the master bedroom and went to bed, according to a court filing. The girl suffered a gunshot wound to her upper right thigh and received stitches, the filing said. Guerra admitted using methamphetamine about a week before the shooting, and said he also uses marijuana, according to the filing. She said her husband lost the key to the gun case and had been storing the gun in a closet. She’s facing a misdemeanor child cruelty charge and has a hearing in May. Deputies who inspected the home found “multiple layers of dried feces” and feces on the wall, according to the filing. They also found cockroaches -- and trash and food covered the floor, the filing said.
