PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — 14 people were burned out of their home in Providence on Wednesday.
The Providence Fire Department responded to a multi-family home on Avon Street around 3:30 p.m.
Crews arrived to find a space heater that was on fire in a third-floor bathroom.
Firefighters put out the flames in about 10 minutes, confining most of the damage to the bathroom.
Officials said they had to open up a wall in the home while fighting the fire, leading to some water getting into the electrical wiring.
Battalion Chief Edward Dwyer offered an important reminder to residents amidst the recent cold snap.
“This time of year, if you’re operating space heaters, make sure you don’t leave them unattended,” he said.
ABC6 spoke with Massachusetts Fire Marshal Jon Davine back in October to learn more about the dangers of space heaters.
He gave the following fire safety tips:
Ensure the heater you’re using has been lab tested
Never plug the heater into an extension cord
Make sure the heater is at least three feet from anything flammable
As evidenced by the Providence fire, Davine concurred that space heaters should never be left unattended.
Dwyer said five adults and nine children were being assisted by the Red Cross after the fire.
No one was injured in the incident.
