The Willoughby Police Department recently provided some safety reminders for residents in light of the holiday season and the new year. Willoughby is currently home to around 22,000 residents, according to the department. “It’s important to remember that safety is a shared responsibility,” a WPD Facebook post reads. “While many of us stay connected on social media, not everyone is on Facebook or follows our page.” The department provided the following safety reminders: • Residents should lock their doors, windows and their cars whether they’re at home or out visiting family. They should make sure everything is secured, especially with valuable gifts and packages around. • Protect property by keeping vehicles locked and avoid leaving valuables inside that could tempt thieves. • Keep deliveries safe. For those expecting packages, try to arrange for deliveries when at home or have them placed in a less obvious location. • Check security system batteries as the cold weather can affect the batteries in security cameras and alarm systems. Ensure they’re fully charged and ready to go. • Properly light the property as well-lit homes are less attractive targets. Consider using outdoor lighting to brighten up dark areas around a home. • Let neighbors know you’ll be out of town. If traveling, let a trusted neighbor know so they can keep an eye on the property. Should residents see anything unusual, they’re encouraged to not hesitate to call their local police department. “It’s better to be safe and stay proactive about keeping our community secure,” the WPD Facebook post reads. “We’re all in this together, so let’s take these simple steps to protect our homes, loved ones and neighbors. Stay safe and stay aware.” Meanwhile, progress is continuing on the renovation of the Meister Media Worldwide building into the new police department. The Willoughby Police Department recently provided some safety reminders for residents in light of the holiday season and the new year. (Marah Morrison — The News-Herald) Willoughby Mayor Robert Fiala observed that this is just one of the transformational projects that’s currently underway in the city. A “coming soon” sign has since been installed in front of the former Meister building, located at 37733 Euclid Ave. “The schematic design drawings are complete and construction documents are expected to be done in early fall, ready for bidding,” Fiala previously reported to The News-Herald. In June, the drawings were presented to City Council. They included advanced technology plans and dispatch equipment the new state-of-the-art jail and dispatch center will see, Fiala said.
