Rockville student convicted after threatening to 'shoot up' school

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) -- A Montgomery County judge found a former Wooton High School student guilty after he threatened to carry out a school shooting.
Alex Ye, who is now 19, was first arrested on April 16, 2024, after a friend reported him to police. Montgomery County Department of Police (MCPD) officers seized a 129-page manifesto from the then-18-year-old Ye, who wrote about committing a school shooting and strategized how to carry it out.
Back in December 2022, Ye was hospitalized after making statements to a counselor at Wooton High School about wanting to "shoot up" his school. In charging documents obtained by DC News Now, he also wrote about targeting an elementary school, saying he wanted to be famous.

"I want to shoot up my school. I've been preparing for it for the past few months," Ye wrote on the first page of his manifesto.
On the last page - page 129 - he wrote, "I hope that I live a good life. And I hope that I don't kill anyone."
Ye was found guilty on one count of Threat of Mass Violence. His sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 28, where he faces up to 10 years in prison.
"There [are] going to be some studies done to try and figure out what is the most appropriate way to deal with this young man," State’s Attorney John McCarthy said in a press conference. "There are clearly emotional and psychiatric issues in play here."
McCarthy applauded Ye's friend, "Max," for coming forward and sharing his concerns with officials.
"Some lives were saved by the actions of Max in this case - we're very, very thankful," he said.
