ROCHESTER N.Y. (WROC) - Shashi Sinha, a Democrat, announced his candidacy for Rochester Mayor on Wednesday. "I'm running for mayor because Rochester needs real change. Change from status quo. My vision is big, our action will be bold," Sinha said. "I'm not a politician, I'm an outsider, just like the rest of us. And let me tell you, I'm not here to make small changes." Sinha announced that he's a technology director, real estate investor, and local businessman. He grew up in India, though he's lived in Rochester for about 15 years. He moved here with his wife, who took a position as a history professor at RIT. Sinha used to study business in France before his IT career in the U.S. took off. He currently owns the Dartmouth House in Rochester. Among his focuses for the position, he spoke about education, public safety, local business, and housing. "Affordable housing, my trigger point, we will stop this tax foreclosure auction day one," he said. "Taxes are too high, my plan is to reduce property taxes by 40%. 5% the first year, 8% the next, 12% and 15% the following year. Real property tax reduction, not like what we have seen - increasing the assessment and then calling it - 'oh, we have reduced the tax rate this much,' no." In terms of housing, Sinha said he intends to ensure that everyone has a roof over their head. During a press conference on Wednesday, Sinha said he plans to crackdown hard on homelessness. "Every year it's the same story, there are 50+ organizations, and the problem is still there," he said. "Every single person who needs a place to sleep, have a roof over their head, will have one. Nobody will be out in the street." He said he's looking to make use of roughly 3,000 vacant lots owned by the City of Rochester to help his plans come to fruition. "I want to build 4,000 housing units within four years. This is nothing like Rochester has seen before. City has destroyed more houses than they have built in the last 25 years," Sinha said. Another big talking point was public safety. Sinha said he wants to make sure police officers can continue to do their jobs with ease. "My plan is to focus on violent crimes. Focus where police is needed. Allocate the resources to violent crimes. All these traffic violations, minor issues, we'll have a different unit to take care of it," Sinha said.
