FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) — Mayor Jerry Dyer is being honored for his 40 years of service to the community with an unveiling of his name on the Regional Police Training Center in Fresno.  "It's a very emotional day for me for a lot of reasons, because it brought back memories of me serving in the police department," Dyer said.  The Fresno Regional Police Training Center has a new name. "The Jerry P. Dyer Regional Training Center in honor of our mayor," Fresno Council Vice President Mike Karbassi said. It highlights Dyers' many years of serving his community. "I never envisioned having a training center named after me," Dyer said. Fresno City councilmembers Mike Karbassi and Tyler Maxwell sponsored the legislation to rename the facility giving Dyer the recognition that he deserves. "The next generation of officers that are trained in Fresno to learn the best practices and keep us safe and themselves safe, they're going to be doing it at this center, named after a dedicated public servant," Karbassi said.  "It's very fitting that we have Jerry Dyer's name forever enshrined on the side of this building to remind people how much he's given in service to this community," Maxwell said. Dyer felt proud of his legacy as Fresno's long time top cop. "My number one goal as a police chief was to never lose a police officer in the line of duty. And it's because of this training center that we were able to maintain that goal," Dyer said.  But he said this is the biggest honor of all. "This is the most significant thing I believe could ever have happened to me in terms of the naming of a building," Dyer said. Dyer felt grateful to share this moment with his loved ones. "To have my family here, to have my children, my wife, my grandchildren here is something meaningful," Dyer said.
