Here’s a roundup for the week from Thursday, Jan. 9, to Wednesday, Jan. 15.

January Ceili
Friday, Jan. 10: Learn and practice Irish dancing along to live music at a traditional gathering with food, dancing and music. The Ceili of the Valley Society is hosting its January Ceili at VFW Hall, 630 Hood St. N.E., where people are encouraged to attend regardless of their experience level. Attendees should wear comfortable shoes and bring water.
The event starts at 7 p.m. and a short dance lesson will start at 7:15 p.m. The ceili will be from 8-11 p.m. Admission is $10 for nonmembers, $8 for members, $5 for students and $30 for a family.
Bush Barn art reception
*Friday, Jan. 10: The Salem Art Association will highlight new exhibits at a reception at the Bush Barn Art Center to display their art for the months of January and February. The Friday reception kicks off the artists’ displays and will include introductions from the artists. Artists include Jeremy Okai, EGOR, or Eilish Gormley, Ruth Orschel and Shari Lord. Some of the art on display will be paintings, including works that explore Black ancestry and a woman’s encounter with an angel.
The center is located inside Bush’s Pasture Park, 600 Mission St. S.E. The event will go from 5:30-7:30 p.m., artist introductions will start at 6 p.m.
Stand up comedy
Saturday, Jan. 11: Join stand up comedian, actor and writer Cara Rosellini for a night of laughs at Infinity Room. Rosellini is a comedian from Seattle who is known for keeping her audiences curious and laughing with her dry sense of humor. She was also recently a semi-finalist for Washington’s Funniest Mammal Competition.
Rosellini’s Salem show is available to all ages, but the material will not be clean. Tickets are $15 online and $20 at the door. The show starts at 8 p.m., doors at 7 p.m. Infinity Room is located at 210 Liberty St. S.E. #150.
Little Red Riding Hood in concert
Sunday, Jan. 12: Salem Symphonic Winds will perform a musical arrangement for Little Red Riding Hood along with a reading by Jeff Witt of author Roald Dahl’s poem. The musical arrangement is from the movie “Spirited Away,” a Japanese anime. The concert will feature clarinet soloist Patrice DeRoest in a performance of “Angels in Allchin Garden.”
The show is part of a four concert series celebrating the 50th year of Salem Symphonic Winds. It will run from 3-5 p.m. at South Salem High School’s Rose Auditorium, 700 Howard St. S.E. Tickets range from $5-20.
Herbal remedies workshop
*Wednesday, Jan. 15: Learn about the art and science of using calendula and yarrow plants to make herbal remedies at a workshop led by the Salem-area office of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians. The workshop will teach about how plants can improve well-being by using calendula and yarrow to make a cream that participants will be able to take home.
The workshop will start at 4:30 p.m. and will take place at 3160 Blossom Dr. N.E. Suite 105. The workshop is designed for adults and children 8 and older. There is limited availability so reserve a spot by emailing [email protected] or calling 503-390-9494.
