PHILADELPHIA — Just days before the playoffs begin with a Wild Card game against the Green Bay Packers, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts returned to the field Wednesday for the first time since being knocked out of a game and entering concussion protocol on Dec. 22. “I’ve been in this position before with a concussion, and when you miss time, you try and find ways to get back as fast as you can,” left tackle Jordan Mailata said. “I think he did a great job of dealing with that and coming back as sharp as he did today. I thought he had a phenomenal practice.” Hurts, wearing a gold hoop in his left ear, a red QB practice jersey and black sweat pants, seemed to move and throw with ease during warmups, held at Lincoln Financial Field rather than NovaCare Complex. Many of his drills focused on balance and footwork. “For somebody who, obviously, physically could be limited, due to the protocol, he looked like he was really dialed in, sharp and crisp,” right tackle Lane Johnson said of Hurts, who didn’t meet with the media. “So obviously, he’s had a few days to plan for Green Bay, but having him back out there today, he looked really sharp. “We had a stadium practice, padded, so I felt like it was a good simulation of kind of what’s coming Sunday.” During the playoffs, teams are again allowed to opt for padded practices, like in training camp. Hurts participated on a limited basis. Head coach Nick Sirianni said he isn’t worried about his quarterback being rusty after nearly three weeks out of action. “No … this is why you go through the process of practicing and all the things that you do at practice to get on the same page and do everything there,” Sirianni said. “We feel like we practice at a very high intensity level. Yeah, this is why you go out there and do those things.” Wednesday’s practice session was key for Hurts’ progression through protocol, because he would be evaluated for any negative side effects the following day, including “neurocognitive and balance” testing. If the results are in line with his baseline tests, he can move on for clearance by the team doctor and, ultimately, an independent neurological consultant approved by the NFL and the NFL Players Association. Hurts suffered the concussion during a road game against Washington during the first quarter, when his head hit the turf after a helmet-to-helmet hit by Commanders linebacker Frankie Luvu as Hurts fell forward at the end of a run. Sirianni said the broken finger on Hurts’ non-throwing hand is healing. Wide receiver A.J. Brown (knee/rest), backup QB Kenny Pickett (ribs) and running back Will Shipley (ankle) were limited in practice. Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore said on Tuesday that he and other coaches had been in contact with Hurts about Sunday’s game plan against Green Bay. “All of us have been in continuous conversations,” Moore said. “We always are, and so, you know, (we’re) excited about that.” Meanwhile, Packers quarterback Jordan Love, who exited Sunday’s regular-season finale against the Chicago Bears with an elbow injury — which caused numbness in his throwing hand — saw limited activity Wednesday. He said he had normal feeling back in his hand, but his elbow was still sore. The recent snow storm left the outdoor fields at NovaCare in poor condition, and the team doesn’t like to use the indoor field here unless it’s absolutely necessary, or if it’s appropriate to an upcoming road dome opponent. Thus, the decision to head across Broad Street. “The field is frozen outside,” Sirianni said in the auditorium before practice. “We’ve tried to get outside as much as we possibly can. We play outside, so unless it’s a torrential downpour or the wind is completely out of control, we’re going to go outside. Can’t go out there today as far as our facility because the field will be frozen, so we will go over to the stadium.”
