Nearly a month after the Wasatch County School Board selected the new Wasatch County high school name — Iron Horse High School — school board members say they’re taking a step back.A letter sent from the board on Jan. 6 says that a new survey “will be sent in January on four final proposed names and mascots determined by past community input.” The survey name and mascot options that will be sent to the Wasatch community include the Deer Creek High School Riverhawks, North Field High School Riverhawks, Heber Valley High School Riverhawks and the previously chosen Iron Horse High School with Thunder as its mascot. The school colors — blue, silver and white — will remain the same. “We took a step back and just took another look at everything,” School Board Vice President Kim Dickerson said.“The board acknowledges the frustration the recent Iron Horse High School Thunder decision and process caused the community,” the board letter reads. “We remain committed to balancing the feedback from the community and the efforts of the board.” This letter comes weeks after Lynne Allred, parent to three kids who will attend the new high school, started an online petition calling for a revote. That petition has now been signed by more than 700 individuals. “I feel like it wasn’t really representative of what we wanted as a people and as a community. It was just what a couple of people wanted,” Allred said. “I want a revote that’s actually planned.”The decision to name the new high school Iron Horse High School came about at a board work session on Dec. 17. Despite all members of the board choosing the name, Tyler Bluth, school board president, insisted that it was not a vote. “We’re not voting,” Bluth said. “We’re just simply making a decision.” Helen Price of VIP Branding presented two additional options at the work session in December, including Deer Creek High School and North Fields High School. Price said that, because the new school “looks like a train station,” the name Iron Horse would align with the look and feel. All three name options were included in previous surveys sent to the Wasatch County community earlier this year. After hearing feedback from the community, board members say that they will make the final decision for the name and mascot through the final upcoming survey. “We recognize and appreciate the desire for additional opportunities to share feedback on this important decision,” the board letter read. “The complete results and the community’s choice, as indicated by the most votes from the survey, will be shared after the survey process.”When asked if the latest update was due to the recent petition for a revote, Dickerson said the decision was unrelated. “I wouldn’t say it was specifically the petition,” Dickerson said. “I would say it’s just the overall community response.”Dickerson said the board will be sending a new survey to “the whole community” by the end of January. The post Wasatch County School Board backtracks on naming new high school Iron Horse appeared first on Park Record.
