Winter storm latest: Heavy snow expected Thursday into Friday
Jan 08, 2025
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — We're on track for a major winter storm to impact the Mid-South, with several inches of snow falling Thursday night through early Friday afternoon.
Expect bitterly cold temperatures in the high teens/low 20s early Thursday, but we should actually see a decent warmup during the day with light southerly flow kicking in through the afternoon. For at least a short time we’ll climb into the mid to high 30s.
Other than the cold, we have no issues through Thursday afternoon. As precipitation begins to arrive from west to east Thursday evening, it’s likely to start as a brief drizzle or sleet before quickly changing over to snow.
Snowfall will intensify overnight and remain heavy at times through Friday morning. The heaviest snow is expected from about 4 a.m. to noon Friday.
► LATEST WEATHER ALERTS
► LATEST SCHOOL CLOSINGS
It will gradually taper off from west to east Friday afternoon. While only a few schools have officially cancelled classes on Friday so far, you should plan on ALL schools ultimately making that decision. Keep up with school closings here.
Everybody in the WREG viewing area is going to get AT LEAST 2-4 inches of snow. However, there will be a large swath of 5-7 inches or more along and south of I-40 down through the Delta and northern Mississippi.
In southern parts of Coahoma, Quitman, Panola, and Lafayette Co. there’s likely to be brief periods of changeover to sleet, which may slightly cut down on localized snow totals. However, 3-5 inches is still very likely in these areas.
Travel will be hazardous, so please stay home unless absolutely necessary. This will be a heavy, wet snow that could also cause sporadic power outages.
Our team of weather experts has you covered every step of the way, and we’re planning on extended coverage for you all day Friday on WREG.
