ANGOLA, Ind. (WANE) - Trine University honored the late Fred Garland with a moment of cheer before Wednesday's home game at the MTI Center, as the school also retired the jersey of the basketball standout who died in a car accident last month. Garland passed away after a crash on I-94 in Calhoun County, Michigan on December 11. A native of Detroit, Garland was a senior on this year's Trine basketball team. He was 22 years old. Last year Garland helped lead the Thunder to the Division III national title, with the championship game played at Fort Wayne's War Memorial Coliseum. The Thunder would go on to defeat Kalamazoo 76-63 on Wednesday to improve to 10-1 overall this season.
