AmeriCorps finish portion of barrier islands renourishment project

SULLIVAN'S ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD)--Residents on Sullivan's Island will notice some changes to Breach Inlet as the Army Corps of Engineers is nearing the final stages of their dune renourishment project.
The project has been in the works since 2023. Working with the Army Corps of Engineers, the town has been dredging sand from nearby areas to fortify the beachfront, building a barrier against storm surges.
“The town is fortunate to be working with the US Army Corps of Engineers on a project where they’re relocating up to 700,000 yd.³ of sand from the spoil areas, said Joe Henderson, Sullivans Island Town Administrator.
In January of 2024, crews began breaking ground on areas that experienced significant erosion, like the breach inlet, which was nearly washed out during a December 2023 Nor’easter. They also focus on other vulnerable areas of Sullivan’s Island and the Isle of Palms. Hoping to protect homes that are being threatened by a shrinking shoreline.
“We do have our regular storm events that we have to deal with, but we are also seeing the results of sea level rise, and this is just one of those projects. The island needs to have the name of resiliency and rebuild some of that dune and beach volume we’ve lost in the years.”
While work along this stretch from breach inlet to station 28 is complete, the project is ongoing in other areas of Sullivan’s Island and the Isle of Palms, and officials are asking the public to be patient as they finish up.
Officials say crews are nearing the final phases on the Isle of Palms, and they plan for the entire project to be completed by mid-February of this year.
