(KTXL) — Satellites high above the Earth are offering a unique view of multiple fires burning in the Los Angeles area this week. Several satellite videos shared by the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere at Colorado State University and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration show the flames and large plumes of smoke as seen from space. Since Tuesday, several wildfires have broken out in the Los Angeles area fueled by strong winds, with the largest being the Palisades Fire and the Eaton Fire. The two fires combined have burned thousands of acres and destroyed several hundred structures and homes. Five deaths have been attributed to the Eaton Fire. A first video from satellites shared on Tuesday night shows the Palisades Fire as it burned in western Los Angeles County. The large plume of smoke can be seen being blown towards the Pacific Ocean. A satellite image from CIRA/NOAA shows the Palisades Fire burning in Los Angeles County on January 7, 2025. A second video taken from space shows an overnight view of the Eaton Fire burning in an inland area just northeast of Altadena and Pasadena. A satellite image from CIRA/NOAA shows the Palisades and Eaton Fires burning in Los Angeles County overnight between January 7 and 8, 2025. The most recent video shared by CIRA/NOAA shows the two fires burning throughout Wednesday with smoke from the Eaton Fire over a large part of the Los Angeles metro area. A satellite image from CIRA/NOAA shows the Palisades and Eaton Fires burning in Los Angeles County on January 8, 2025. The fires are being fueled by dry vegetation in the hills and strong Santa Ana winds, with some gusts reaching nearly 100 miles per hour. When will winds die down in Southern California? The worst of the winds is expected to subside by Wednesday evening, although windy and dry conditions could continue for several days.
