BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — On Wednesday, the newly-elected Mayor President Sid Edwards talked to Rotary Club members about his first days in office and how he plans to move the city forward. “I’m not a weak man and I’m going to fight like hell for this parish and work with people to get us where we need to be,” said Edwards.  During the meeting, he addressed plans in the works that could bring in more jobs, clean up the city, and his need to get rid of blighted property. “Right now, my staff is assembling a list of all the blighted and vacant property owned by the city parish, and very soon, we will begin knocking them all down,” he said.  A big goal is to tackle crime, he said his team has been reaching out to retired police officers who may want to serve again.  "We're looking at a new policy, 'Retire, Rehire' deal and trying to get them back into the building, back on the streets, back working,” he said.  Edwards has been active all over the parish, looking at the needs and meeting with communities. This includes spending a lot of time in North Baton Rouge, a place where there’s a need.  “Over here, needs just as much as over here. But I need resources on the north side of town. I need you to step up. I mean, it's just some things we can do, you know, to help each other out,” he said.  Audit shows $6K paid to two Iberville Parish employees for time not worked As he takes office, he hopes to unify the parish but it’s something that he can’t do alone.  "All the problems that are in the north, they're also in the south,” he said. “I think the biggest thing is trying to unify. It's so easy to say it, but the resistance is real. No matter what, some people just are not going to do it and the key is we got to rely on the ones who are.” He hopes people indeed unite, and said he is welcoming all sorts of ways to help, from resources to ideas and more.  Latest News Why did fire hydrants go 'dry' for crews fighting an LA fire?
