BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- Hurricane force winds are blamed for feeding the flames of multiple fires tearing through LA County threatening lives and property. Captain Codi Adams with the Bakersfield Fire Department said, "These Santa Ana winds you know, are unpredictable and hearing gusts of up to 80, 100 miles per hour down there is pretty serious. "It's like a jet engine propelling the fire," said Battalion Chief Jonathan Drucker with the Kern County Fire Department. On Wednesday, help from Kern County was on its way in the form of multiple strike teams. Could Bakersfield see wind-driven urban fires like those in LA County now? Absolutely The Bakersfield Fire Department sent a strike team with a 4x4 Wildland engine to the Eaton Fire in Pasadena that's killed at least five people and destroyed more than 100 structures since Tuesday. Captain Adams said, "Whether we're protecting homes or fighting the fire in the wildland, we can do both." The strike team has crews and equipment designed to fight the fire in rugged terrain. It's not just BFD sending crews...the Kern County Fire Department sent 160 firefighters, more than 15 fire engines, and multiple dozers to the Palisades Fire that erupted Tuesday morning, threatening more than 25,000 structures. ‘Nobody’s here’: Business dips at Mercado Latino amid Border Patrol operation KCFD Battalion Chief Drucker said, "They do very dirty work. Oftentimes, going up right against walls of fire while they're cutting vegetation and creating fire breaks." The KCFD says off-duty personnel were brought back to keep the 8,000 square miles of Kern County safe. "These are all positions we are able to backfill and that involves firefighters coming back to work on their day off," said Drucker. These firefighters are in the fight for their lives, but the hardest part of the job isn't the danger, it's being away from home. "It's always hard to say goodbye because you don't know if you're going to be gone for one day, to 14 to 21 days," said Adams. "I have two little kids at home." Drucker said the hope is that the cooler temperatures will help slow the progression of the multiple fires from growing even more threatening lives and property.
