Hays County Sheriff opens 2025 Citizens Academy applications

HAYS COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) -- Sheriff Anthony Hipolito announced on Wednesday, that applications are now being accepted for the 2025 Spring session of the Hays County Sheriff's Office Citizens Academy.
The 12-week program is designed to help Hays County residents gain a deeper understanding of the county's sheriff's office and the criminal justice system, according to the release.
HCSO said the academy will begin on Feb. 20, and run on Thursday evenings from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Public Safety Building located at 810 South Stagecoach Trail. The course will be taught by HCSO staff and guest speakers.
The release said the program will cover a wide range of topics that include:
Patrol Operations
Jail Operations
9-1-1 Dispatch
Use of Force
Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT)
Crisis Negotiations
Mental Health
Criminal Investigations
The sheriff's office said students will also have the opportunity to join deputies for a ride-along experience on a patrol shift.
The release said applicants must be at least 18 years of age, reside or work in Hays County and successfully pass a background check. Individuals with felony convictions, those on parole or probation, or those convicted of an offense are not eligible for the program.
Applications must be completed by Feb 14, according to the sheriff's office.
