WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- Thousands of people lined up in the bitter cold on Wednesday to pay their respects to late President Jimmy Carter. His casket is lying in state at the U.S. Capitol through Thursday morning. "I think Jimmy Carter was a really decent guy. And he told the truth, and I found that really refreshing," said Mary from McLean, Va. Carter is remembered by Americans from across the country and in the DMV. All about Jimmy Carter’s life, legacy "He had an impacting presidency, but more so, all the public service he did after, especially Habitat for Humanity," said Robert Smolich. "And after spending a couple of years in Georgia myself, feeling the impact that he had for that state, I definitely wanted to come and just pay my respects." Smolich, who lives in Arlington, brought his sister and mother, who are visiting from Wisconsin. "He just did so much for everybody, unselfishly," Carol Smolich said. Michael Rager, down in the District from Hagerstown, may question Carter's politics, but not his character. "He was a great man. Not the best president, but the things he did after it, he was truly [an] amazing human being," Rager said. Carter is remembered for his humility and humanitarian work. "Wanted to pay my last respects to former President Carter. He was the first president that I can remember knocking on doors and supporting back when I was in high school, back in the late 70s," said Anothy Reed of Columbia, Md. There were fond memories shared by some and a show of respect from all. "I always thought he was a good man, a man of faith and a principle. I just always appreciated the type of person he was," Reed said. A state funeral will be held Thursday morning at the Washington National Cathedral. President Joe Biden will deliver a eulogy and other living former presidents, including President-elect Donald Trump are expected to attend.
