SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- The parole hearing for the man convicted of murder in the death of a professional surfer nearly two decades ago has been postponed due to the wildfires raging in and around the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Seth Cravens, a member of the so-called "Bird Rock Bandits," a group known to pick fights in and near the La Jolla neighborhood, was scheduled to appear in court for his parole hearing Wednesday afternoon. RELATED: ‘Bird Rock Bandit’ convicted of murder up for parole On May 23, 2007, Cravens and his crew attacked 24-year-old Emery Kauanui, a young pro surfer, outside his mother’s home following a verbal altercation at a local bar. Cravens threw a punch to his head that knocked him out. Five days later, Kauanui died at the hospital from what the San Diego County Medical Examiner determined as blunt force trauma. On Wednesday, Cravens, now in his late 30s, was going to learn whether a parole board would grant him a second chance at freedom. However, the parole hearing was postponed to a different date due to the wildfires burning in the Los Angeles area, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. The new hearing date has not yet been shared.
