(KRON) -- A spokesperson for California Gov. Gavin Newsom has hit back at a tweet from President Elect Donald Trump blaming Newsom for the Los Angeles wildfires, blasting it as "pure fiction." Trump posted to X, formerly Twitter, via his Truth Social account accusing Newsom of refusing to "sign the water restoration declaration put before him that would have allowed millions of water, from excess rain and snow melt from the North, to flow daily into many parts of California." The water, according to Trump, would've flowed into "areas that are currently burning in a virtually apocalyptic way." "There is no such document as the water restoration declaration -- that is pure fiction," said Newsom's Director of Communications Izzy Gardon, as reported by KRON4's Eytan Wallace. "The Governor is focused on protecting people, not playing politics, and making sure firefighters have all the resources they need." During the first Trump administration, the president suggested that Californians could prevent wildfires by "raking" the forests. As of Wednesday afternoon, the LA wildfires have scorched tens of thousands of acres, burned over a thousand structures and were responsible for at least two deaths.
