.................... PASADENA, Calif. (KTLA) – Five people have now been confirmed dead due to the raging Eaton Fire, which has scorched more than 10,000 acres in Pasadena and Altadena, east of Los Angeles. The fire, which broke out around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday near Altadena Drive and Midwick Drive, exploded overnight amid Santa Ana winds gusting up to 100 mph. On Wednesday afternoon, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said the death toll has risen, confirming three more people have died. Additionally, an undetermined amount of homes and businesses have been destroyed. The Eaton Fire is among four active fires in Los Angeles County that are being driven by the dry hurricane-force winds. As of 3:20 p.m., the fire has burned 10,600 acres with no containment. Currently, more than 700 firefighters are battling the blaze, including 9 hand crews, 79 fire engines, and 8 water tenders. L.A. County Sheriff Robert Luna described the situation surrounding the Eaton Fire, the second-largest active wildfire in the Los Angeles area, during a Wednesday morning press conference as "very fluid." Authorities from the Los Angeles County Fire Department, as well as the U.S. Forest Service and the Pasadena Fire Department, are responding to the blaze. Still, officials noted that all 29 L.A. County Fire Department stations are stretched thin to the point where resources from other states need to be called in to aid in the firefight. San Gabriel Valley and Glendale schools have been closed throughout the week. The cause of the fire remained under investigation. The Eaton Fire was one of four large, active wildfires in the Los Angeles area. The largest, the 5,000-acre Palisades Fire, destroyed an estimated 1,000 structures. A separate 500-acre fire, the Hurst Fire, burned in the L.A. neighborhood of Sylmar. A fast-moving fire in the Antelope Valley called the Lidia Fire has burned at least 50 acres and forced evacuations. Two other small wildfires were reported on Wednesday, the Tyler Fire near Coachella and the Woodley Fire in the Sepulveda Basin of the San Fernando Valley, but have since been extinguished.
