WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) -- The fun competition held each year over the holidays has a winner, who was decided by a vote of blood donors. During the American Red Cross Battle of the Badges, people who donate blood or platelets can vote for their favorite group of first responders: EMS, fire, or law enforcement. The different agencies use social media to encourage people to donate and vote for them. Storm Track 3 Forecast: More snow is on the way. Above freezing weekend temps This year, the firefighters won the friendly battle for the sixth year in a row. The American Red Cross says 823 people donated pints of whole blood, while 685 donated platelets. "That really shows the amazing support that citizens of Wichita and Sedgwick County do," Capt. Chris Fleming, Wichita Fire Department, said. "They come out, and they really support this event when traditionally blood donations are down. They really rallied around our first responders and came out." He says the true winners are all the recipients of the blood products, and he encouraged more people to donate, even people who have never donated. Scammers use Amazon claim to get $15K from Wichita man "We want to invite you to come down and donate this gift of life," Fleming said. "It takes about an hour. It doesn't take long, but you really have the impact, the possibility of impacting someone's life." To schedule an appointment, visit RedCrossBlood.org.
