SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - You may have noticed that the cost of eggs is up again and that there are not many options in the grocery store. The price for eggs has spiked, reaching a record of nearly $9 for a dozen eggs in certain parts of the U.S. This has an impact on not only grocery stores but local restaurants in the area as well. The owner of Nadim's Downtown Mediterranean Grill Nadim Kashouh says many businesses are getting hit hard with this increase in prices. "We hope it is going to be short term and not long term because then we have to adjust and figure out what we are going to do with the prices of not only eggs but poultry as well.," says Kashouh. "Everything is going up and it's going to affect us." Reports from the USDA show that the average cost for a dozen eggs has gone up to more than 60% over the last year. The reason behind the spike in prices is the avian flu outbreaks in poultry items. According to the American Farm Bureau Federation, more than 100 million birds throughout the poultry industry have been affected by avian influenza since 2022, including 3.6 million from this past October. This hike in prices has caused restaurants to raise the price for their egg dishes across the country and it has left grocery stores without many options to sell. But Kashough says his business has not raised any prices at the moment but he is hopeful that this will all come to an end soon. He adds, "We hope it is kind of a temporary issue but unfortunately for things to go back to normal it can take 3-4 months to kind of level off." And while it can take months for this bird flu outbreak to clear up in the poultry industry-- Kashough says this can also impact Super Bowl meals as many people traditionally get wings to watch the big game.
