KINDERHOOK, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Crews were called to a massive fire at a barn at Samascott's Orchard in Kinderhook in eastern New York on Tuesday night. According to David Bartlett, the first assistant chief for the Kinderhook Fire Department, the cause of the fire has yet to be determined however, the fire caused propane and ammonia tanks in the barn to explode which aided in burning the structure to the ground. Police said the fire began around 7 p.m. Video of the fire shows the barn fully in flames. Bartlett said that fire crews worked to put out the fire for three hours in the cold, harsh conditions. "We do what's called a 360, where we go around the building," Bartlett said. "When I got to the rear of the building, the only way I could describe it as a wildland fire out west. The embers were traveling all the way down to the light in the village. We had hotspots starting in people’s yards where we had to have other fire trucks driving around looking and finding these small fires to make sure nothing else caught on fire.” A nearby neighbor, Sabine Murphy, said she was startled by the sound of an explosion. Queer-founded community café now open in Pittsfield "So last night when I got home from walking the dogs, there was a big boom, and the whole house shook," Murphy said. "There were some other subsequent bursts that didn’t make the house shake anymore, but they were big booms.” The farm belonged to the Samascott family, who have been operating the farm for four generations. They lost apples, vehicles, and produce in the fire. No one was injured. The orchard put out a statement on their Facebook page that said, "We lost our main barn tonight. So thankful everyone is safe. We can’t thank all the firefighters enough who have been working for hours to put out this massive fire and are still hard at work right now. We won’t be at any markets this week and will update you all as soon as we can." The Kinderhook Fire Department is currently investigating the fire.
