ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Two people are now facing charges accused of prostituting underage girls on central. Now, Albuquerque police say it's putting a plan together to tackle the bigger problem.
Tajahnae Maryann Johnson and Roderick Norseweather are facing two counts of human trafficking. The department said detectives talked with a 14-year-old girl who was seen soliciting sex near Central and Rhode Island. "Both of them were trafficking victims that were under the age of 16 and under. And we started with these operations in September," said APD Chief Harold Medina.

Chief Harold Medina said a total of 40 people from September to now have been arrested during three different operations across the city. The chief said these traffickers are bringing people 16 and under across state lines for sex work.
Medina said the focus of the operations is on the traffickers and the johns, not on those who are being trafficked. He said they need help, not jail. "We could arrest every single individual that is conducting sex acts for money on the streets of Albuquerque to jail. And the truth is, that they'll be out of jail within a week, probably credit time served, and we'll start this vicious cycle all over again," continued Chief Medina.
Chief Medina also stressed the importance of their partnerships with agencies like Albuquerque Sane, which offers a variety of services for victims such as STI treatments, counseling, and even forensic exams which have helped in the prosecution of traffickers.
APD said it's important to see this as more than a law enforcement issue, and make sure victims are getting healthcare and other resources. Right now, there are two people in APD's human trafficking unit. They're working to expand that to eight.
