HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Henrico County is under a boil water advisory effective immediately Wednesday afternoon.
In an update provided by Henrico County at around 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 8, officials said the entire county is under a boil water advisory until further notice.
The advisory comes under the guidance of the Virginia Department of Health as the county continues to work to restore water service to communities in the county's central and eastern areas, and is issued out of an abundance of caution, according to officials.
Earlier on Wednesday, officials said the Department of Health issued a boil water advisory for eastern Henrico, however, county officials extended the advisory to the whole county in recognition of the "interconnected nature of the county's water system."
Henrico residents, businesses and other users of the county's water system are advised not to drink or cook with tap water without boiling it first.
During the conference, County Manager John Vithoulkas said that on Wednesday afternoon Richmond's Church Hill Water Tank was energized, which he said feeds into the county's Elko area. At 3:15 p.m., the tank was reportedly able to start providing water into the Elko area.
"So between the efforts that we have made getting deeper into [the] Varina [area] overnight and through today, and now the Elko area starting to receive water, we are going to see water come into Varina as we speak and overnight," Vithoulkas said.
This comes after the county reported water pressure issues on Tuesday, Jan. 7. Vithoulkas previously stated that the issues arose after the City of Richmond contacted them about a temporary failure at the city’s water treatment plant.
While Henrico officials reportedly acted quickly to disconnect their water system from Richmond’s and reroute to their own water treatment plant, Vithoulkas said it took a number of hours for them to receive information from Richmond and they could not act as quickly as they wanted to.
Early on Tuesday morning, after switching the county’s water system over, there was a major water main break in the county.
According to the county, Richmond's water treatment plant has begun to repressurize its water system, which is expected to restore water to areas of eastern Henrico "in the coming days."
