Da Vinci Center to open as warming center after controversy at City Hall
Jan 08, 2025
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A spokesperson for the Providence City Council said the Da Vinci Center on Charles Street will be open as a warming center Wednesday night.
The night prior, City Hall was open as a warming shelter for the unhoused community.
The spokesperson said the mayor’s administration gave city council approval for use of the building.
This comes after Mayor Smiley said in a statement that he doesn’t agree with last night’s decision, in which he said it was disrespectful to city partners who work with the homeless community.
Councilman Miguel Sanchez said the council has been calling for more shelter beds for the winter for months.
The Da Vinci Center will be open from 7 p.m. Wednesday to 7 a.m. Thursday.
