WESTPORT, Mass. (WLNE) — The Westport Fire Department responded to a brush fire on Mouse Mill Road on Wednesday.
Around 11:30 a.m., crews responded to a brush fire near a large outbuilding.
The cause of the fire is believed to have come from discarded embers from a fireplace.
Officials said it appears the embers were put out with water, but reignited from gusty winds, which caused a brush fire towards the end of the property.
A neighbor who noticed smoke in the area called 911.
When discarding hot embers or ashes, the Westport Fire Department reminds residents to pay extra attention when soaking them in water, and to store them in a metal barrel with a lid away from exposures.
