Jan 08, 2025
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A new comprehensive study shows what the closure of the westbound side of the Washington Bridge is doing to the hospitality industry in Rhode Island.
According to a report by the Rhode Island Hospitality Association and Salve Regina University, there has been a projected $114 million loss in statewide hospitality-related revenue.
The bridge closure has created a "substantial strain on local businesses and employment," the study found.

Providence County saw most of the impact, with $56.7 million in revenue lost. Kent County lost $29.8 million, Newport County lost $16.5 million and Washington County lost $17.6 million, according to the study.
The study also estimates that more than 1,300 hospitality jobs were lost in the same period, with the most occurring in Providence County.
Bristol County, however, saw a 2.3% increase in hospitality revenue. The study attributed that to a "shift in consumer travel patterns, with some economic activity being redistributed to areas less affected by the bridge closure."
After looking at the past year, the study projects the state will see a $748 million loss in revenue by 2029.
