Court: Beaudion Jr. competent for trial
Jan 08, 2025
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – A man charged with kidnapping, raping and murdering a woman in 2020 is competent to stand trial.
Amir Beaudion Jr., now 24 years old, appeared at the Minnehaha County Courthouse Wednesday morning. He's accused of kidnapping Pasqalina Badi as she was leaving the Sioux Falls Walmart where she worked. Authorities believe Beaudion raped and killed her and then left her body in the ditch along a Lincoln County highway.

In October 2023, more than three years after the crime, a psychiatrist determined Beaudion was schizophrenic. She described his behavior as quote "very psychotic" and his thinking as disorganized. She said Beaudion told her the crimes he was charged with were not that serious, and he often talked about having spiritual enlightenment.
Since then, Beaudion has been receiving antipsychotic medication. A psychiatrist told the judge it wouldn't cure him of his mental illness but would lessen the severity. By last November, she says Beaudion's behavior had improved significantly.
She told the judge Beaudion could identify his murder charge and a basic understanding of court proceedings. She said his religious beliefs had become more faith-based rather than delusional, and as long as Beaudion continued his medication, she believed he could stand trial.
Defense attorneys argued Beaudion still shows signs of cognitive processing deficits and questioned whether he will be able to assist with his defense.
In the end, the judge decided Beaudion is capable of going on trial and the case can move forward, following years of delays.
