MARION, Ark. — A warming center has opened in Crittenden County, Arkansas as cold weather moves in.
The center is at The Crossings Church at 81 Military Road in Marion.
"According to the latest weather estimates, seven inches plus of snow in our area. So, yeah, we're just trying to make sure that we're open to those that need us," said Bud Spears, EMA Director for Crittenden County.
This warming center opened Wednesday at 9 a.m. and will stay operational through Saturday at 10 a.m.
The Marion School District is providing three meals a day for those using the center. Other food donations have come in, as well as donations of blankets and toiletries.
Crittenden County EMA will provide cots for those needing to stay overnight.
Members of the Called to Grow men's ministry have volunteered to help.
"We're just serving the Lord," Joseph Harper said. "We're just trying to do what we can to help less fortunate people get warm, stay warm, people who don't have no warmth."
While all are welcomed, for security reasons, anyone who leaves the warming center after 6 p.m. will not be allowed back in the center until 9 the following morning.
Authorities stress this weather system will be dangerous and no one should be outdoors for any length of time.
