VERSAILLES, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW)- 12-year-old Clay Dearinger has a passion for the pigskin that’s unrivaled.
He collects football memorabilia, plays the popular Madden video game and loves to watch his favorite San Francisco 49ers players suit up on Sundays.
“I love watching football the most probably. You don’t have to do anything to be a fan. You just have to have that pride,” said Dearinger. “The excitement and the joy that you’re taking in just makes you happy.”
Clay not only collects memories watching any game he can find on television, but also jerseys of every sport.
Peyton Manning, Christian McCaffery. Jude Bellingham and Devin Booker are just some of the names that he wears on his back.
But, the boy who should’ve been born with a ball in his hand, came into this world with something else.
X-Linked Blue Cone Monochromatism is a condition that affects Clay’s vision. Some of his cones in his retina don’t work.
“That’s why he has low vision and his colors are off. He has a vision disability, but he doesn’t let that stop him,” said Clay’s mother, Angela Dearinger.
Even though Clay’s vision is weaker than most people’s, his voice is as strong as anyone else’s.
“I’ve had to tell teachers this is too small I need it blown up or this won’t work with my visual device,” said Clay. “I just had to understand that things were going to be different than me from everyone else.”
He’s using that voice to fit in with his favorite activity too.
“From an early age I knew I wasn’t able to play sports because I can’t see the football that well until it’s right there,” said Dearinger. “That’s why I turned to sports broadcasting. It’s another thing that, since I couldn’t do sports, I wanted to do to be immersed in the game.”
As the newest member of the Yellow Jacket Sports Network, Clay has called two high school football games and has his sights on basketball this winter.
His first opportunity came with play-by-play veteran Darrin Douglas, who surprised him with the news that he’d be calling his first game minutes before kickoff.
“I didn’t know I was going to get to do it. It was very exciting,” said Clay. “I was so eager to call the game that all my stress melted away. It was probably the best night of my life.”
With one dream down and many more to go, he has his eyes on the promised land of sports broadcasting.
“My dream is to eventually make it to ESPN,” said Clay.
