LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – Crews have been working to keep roads clear of snow, but ABC 36 News Now had some concerns come into the newsroom about people walking in the road because sidewalks haven’t been cleared. We decided to look a little deeper into who exactly is responsible for clearing them. Sidewalks could be seen still covered in snow, with small snowbanks on the sides, Wednesday afternoon. The big question, who is responsible for clearing the sidewalks? ABC 36 looked into the city’s code of ordinances, and according to the code, it’s not the city, but property owners who have to clear these sidewalks. But because of Mayor Linda Gorton’s snow emergency declaration, that part of the code has been put on ice The mayor’s office says while clear sidewalks are important, under the current icy conditions, clearing them would be dangerous for many people. If you really have to be out on foot, officials are urging you to be extra cautious on slick sidewalks and streets.
