CAMBY, Ind. - The cleanup after the first snowfall of the year in central Indiana is still ongoing. In one Camby neighborhood, a man and his two young daughters have spent the last few days shoveling driveways. “How about we shovel snow, but we do it for free for people who don’t have the money or who are not able,” said John Mitchell from Camby.  It all started with this Facebook post: HEARTLAND Neighbors SHOVEL YOUR DRIVEWAY FOR FREE, if you are over 65 or older / or disabled, sick etc, please just give a good reason you can’t lol I just want to do something nice and show my girls what good deeds are! Again, My daughters and I will shovel your driveway for FREE. Just PM me your address and we will start in the early AM tomorrow. John Mitchell didn’t expect the responses to pile up like they did. “I am in a Facebook neighborhood group and there were over 300 likes on it and I didn't even know that there were that many neighbors in the group,” he said. His daughters, 10-year-old Jackie and 8-year-old Jillian, picked up their own shovels to help too. While many of their friends were out playing in the snow, these girls were hard at work. “We don't ask for money,” Jillian said. “We don't want money. We just want to see people have happy faces.” “We just want to get away from the money and help people and show how more kindness [needs] to be spread around,” Jackie said. It started with just one house before the Mitchells had cleared out half a dozen homes. “They were ready to go to more driveways back and forth because they just loved when the people would wave and say, ‘thank you’ or [when they would] message us,” John Mitchell said. “It just puts a smile on my face and their faces. It was just amazing.” Some neighbors even offered to give them money but the answer was still no. “Just the kindness we gave you today just spread it on,” John Mitchell said. “Because that's what we need in this neighborhood. He was so grateful. He said he came from Texas and he said, ‘Nobody does this in Texas’ and I said, ‘Well, welcome to Indiana.’” The Mitchell family becomes local heroes for their dedication to snow shovelingThe Mitchell family becomes local heroes for their dedication to snow shovelingThe Mitchell family becomes local heroes for their dedication to snow shovelingThe Mitchell family becomes local heroes for their dedication to snow shovelingThe Mitchell family becomes local heroes for their dedication to snow shovelingThe Mitchell family becomes local heroes for their dedication to snow shovelingThe Mitchell family becomes local heroes for their dedication to snow shoveling The Mitchells are just hoping to inspire others to go out and spread their own kindness. “We could've probably made money on it but just to go out there and do hard work and find out doing something nice feels better than making money sometimes,” he said. With more snow expected in the forecast, and all through the winter, the Mitchells said they're ready to jump into action again, any time to help even more homeowners.
