WinstonSalem prepares for incoming winter weather

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP) -- The City of Winston Salem and the North Carolina Department of Transportation are already treating roads ahead of a winter storm system.
The city and the NCDOT are already putting brine on the roads. They’ve been at that since Tuesday, and the city has 900 tons of salt prepared.
There’s a lot of road to cover before a winter storm.
“Each truck has got to clear between 15 and 20 miles of road,” NCDOT Division 9 Maintenance Engineer Mark Crook said.
They have a long road to brine ahead of them.
“There’s 10,000 lane miles of roads in Division 9,” Crook said.
The City of Winston-Salem doesn’t have as much to cover, but they’ve already been hard at work as well.
“We’re concentrating on the major arterial and then the collectors and then any routes that are to critical care facilities like hospitals or dialysis centers,” an official with the City of Winston-Salem said.
It’s been a few years since this area has seen this much snow.
“We are taking some extra steps to train our new folks that haven’t worked snow and ice events for us,” Crook said.
This isn’t a time to panic. It’s just time to prepare like Bud McCant.
“We’re going to make sure we have the essentials ... I just got out of the hospital, and I was in the hospital when it snowed ... I couldn’t go anywhere. Knowing that the road conditions could get bad quickly, you just need to make sure you have the stuff that you need for a day or two,” McCant said.
Tim Thompson agrees.
“You need to get milk and bread. You’ve got to go get some milk and bread, and grapes are popular in North Carolina. Muscadine, right? We need to get some muscadine wine,” Thompson said.
City officials also remind people using a space heater to plug it directly into the wall and not plug it into an extension cord.
Also, make sure all debris is cleared out of fireplaces before using them to help prevent a fire.
