Winter storm system headed to Piedmont Triad
Jan 08, 2025
(WGHP) -- The cold air is here. Now, we are waiting for our potential system to arrive.
Thursday will be sunny and cold with lows in the upper teens. A northwesterly morning breeze will make it feel like temperatures are in the single digits. So, dress warmly and in layers on Thursday morning. Highs on Thursday afternoon will be in the middle 30s.
On Friday, a Gulf Coast system will begin to push clouds into the Piedmont. Friday morning will be mostly cloudy with temperatures in the upper 20s. After lunchtime Friday, snow showers will move in. At this time, it appears that the snow showers will be light. Highs on Friday will be in the middle 30s. Chance of snow 60%. Most of the snow will move in Friday night into early Saturday morning. There's still a chance some warm air aloft could move into the system, changing our snow into a possible mix of snow and sleet. Across the far southern Piedmont like southern Randolph County and Montgomery County, the snow/sleet mix could end as freezing rain or a plain cold rain. Our weather maker will be a fast mover. That means by sunrise Saturday, the precipitation should be over. The early estimate regarding snow/sleet totals is 1 to 2 inches. North of the Interstate 40/85 corridor, that's a chance some towns and communities could see more than 2 inches of snow and sleet.
Saturday, our storm system will move away from the United States. Looking for increasing sunshine during the day on Saturday with highs in the mid to upper 30s.
Sunny and cold Sunday with lows around 20 degrees and highs in the upper 30s.
Sunny and warmer on Monday with lows in the lower 20s and highs in the low to middle 40s.
Tuesday, sunny and cooler with lows in the middle 20s and highs around 40 degrees.
Wednesday, mostly sunny with lows in the upper teens and highs in the upper 30s.
