WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) -- President-elect Donald Trump returned to Capitol Hill Wednesday for a closed-door meeting with GOP senators to discuss the execution of his legislative agenda.  Republicans, working with narrow margins in both chambers, are strategizing on how to pass immigration reform, extend tax breaks and enact federal spending cuts without Democratic support. Ahead of the meeting, Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) predicted that reconciliation bills will be split into two. The first, focusing on immigration reform and energy policy, will be the easier lift. The second, addressing Trump’s expiring tax cuts and reducing the federal budget, will pose greater challenges. Capito said Republicans are still determining how to effectively rein in the federal deficit. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) said Senate Republicans agree that the federal government spends too much but are still working to align on specific cuts. He added that tech billionaire Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative has provided some valuable suggestions. On the Senate floor Wednesday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) criticized the GOP strategy, calling it out of touch with the needs of working-class Americans. “Republicans are getting ready to use the reconciliation process to reward the richest Americans,” Schumer said. He argued that Trump’s 2017 tax plan was a giveaway to the wealthy. “The last time, they claimed it would trickle down to working people and the middle class. It most certainly did not,” Schumer said. On Tuesday, House Republicans vowed to pass major parts of Trump’s agenda by Easter.
