Waiting watching for wintry weather
Jan 08, 2025
The second Hump Day of 2025 is here, and Mother Nature is ready to make things interesting as we stroll towards the weekend. Expect clear skies to last through Thursday night as highs only top out near 40° in the Piedmont and Foothills. Lows will dip into the 20s and teens across the board both Wednesday and Thursday nights. Expect clouds to build in by Friday morning ahead of incoming moisture from the southwest.
It’s been nearly three years – January 29, 2022 – since Charlotte last snow measurable snow. That streak is in serious jeopardy by Friday night. Snow arrives for all 22 counties in the WCCB Charlotte viewing area from the southwest by Friday evening, which could be heavy at times along and north of I-85. Highs will struggle to get much above freezing from the Sandhills to the Foothills Friday afternoon as the snow begins to accumulate. Warm air aloft will filter into the Carolinas as the heart of the system approaches, which will create a transition line from snow to a wintry mix, and – eventually – wintry mix to all rain farther to the south. How far north these transition lines creep is critical to the forecast.
Most of the moisture clears to the northeast by sunrise Saturday before the Piedmont and Foothills completely dry out by noon. Northwesterly flow could lead to a few additional inches of snow falling in the High Country through Saturday evening. Highs will rise into the mid-40s Saturday afternoon before more cold air sinks lows near 20° in the Metro Sunday morning. The cold and dry air sticks around through the weekend into next week.
