CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The National Weather Service in Charleston issued Wednesday a ‘cold weather advisory’ for much of the South Carolina coastline as very cold temperatures move into the region. A ‘cold weather advisory’ is issued by the National Weather Service when seasonably cold air temperatures or wind chill values, but not extremely cold values, are expected or occurring. Overnight temperatures for much of the area are forecast in the mid-to-low 20s. It could feel even colder for some. The advisory is active from midnight until 9 a.m. Thursday with wind chills as low as 17 degrees expected for counties across the Lowcountry. The advisory is also active from 4 a.m. until 9 a.m. for Georgetown and Williamsburg Counties. Forecasters say areas such as Andrews, Kingstree, Georgetown, and Murrells Inlet could have wind chill values as low as 15 degrees, according to the weather service. Things should remain dry. Forecasters warn that very cold temperatures could lead to hypothermia with prolonged exposure. “Use caution while traveling outside. Wear warm clothing, a hat, and gloves,” said NWS forecasters. “Frostbite and hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin is exposed to these temperatures. Wind chill values can lead to hypothermia with prolonged exposure.” People should keep their pets indoors and are encouraged to frequently check on older family, friends, and neighbors. Also, use portable heaters correctly, and only plug them directly into a safe outlet and never an extension cord or power strip. Keep the space heater at least three feet away from combustible materials like furniture, bedding, and curtains. A taller heater may need to be even farther away.
