Ascension, Livingston Schools possibly impacted by PowerSchool data breach: What to know
Jan 08, 2025
BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Ascension Public Schools and Livingston Parish Schools were notified Tuesday of a potential data breach of education software PowerSchool.
According to Ascension Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Edith Walker, the school system notified parents about a cybersecurity incident that occurred around Dec. 28, 2024.
PowerSchool told the school district that someone used a compromised credential to gain access to the Students Information System (SIS) data. When PowerSchool became aware of the potential data breach, law enforcement agencies were alerted and the system was locked down.
The company stated they have "reasonable assurances from the threat actor that the data has been deleted and that no additional copies exist."
Personal information of staff members and students for some districts may have been accessed. This could include contact information, social security numbers, dates of birth, grade information for current and former students and addresses.
PowerSchool said, “While we are unaware of and do not expect any actual or attempted misuse of personal information or any financial harm to impacted individuals as a result of this incident, PowerSchool will be providing credit monitoring to affected adults and identity protection services to affected minors in accordance with regulatory and contractual obligations.”
School officials said it is safe to keep using PowerSchool. According to the software company, “the incident is contained and we have no evidence of malware or continued unauthorized activity in the PowerSchool environment. PowerSchool is not experiencing any operational disruption, nor expects to experience any operation disruption and continues to provide services as normal to our customers.”
The Ascension Public Schools Board has notified its cybersecurity contractor.
Walker said more information would be shared with any impacted individuals.
