BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- A 21-year-old man said he'd been drinking before a crash last month that killed a pedestrian -- admitting he drove away without checking on the man he hit, according to a warrant filed in Superior Court.
Oscar Quintero-Lopez is being held without bail on charges of hit and run causing death, DUI and driving without a license. A preliminary hearing is scheduled next month.
The crash happened around 9:30 p.m. on Dec. 9. Police said a man walking outside of a crosswalk was hit by a Toyota Camry traveling south on Union Avenue near Brundage Lane. The Toyota left the scene.
Moments later, a pickup hit the man. The driver initially left, but returned and cooperated with the investigation, police said. He was not under the influence, police said.
A surveillance camera captured the Toyota's license plate. A records check revealed the car was registered to Quintero-Lopez -- and that he'd been arrested on suspicion of drunken driving two months earlier, according to the warrant.
Police went to his home and Quintero-Lopez admitted driving the car that night and hitting a pedestrian, according to the warrant. He also admitted drinking beforehand, the warrant says, and a preliminary breath test indicated his blood-alcohol content was above the legal limit of 0.08%.
