AUSTIN (KXAN) -- As Austin braces for wintry weather to potentially hit on Thursday, Austin Mayor Kirk Watson, Travis County Judge Andy Brown, and other city and county officials on Wednesday discussed updates to city and county cold weather preparations. The KXAN First Warning Weather Team anticipates Thursday morning will see the arrival of scattered storms along with freezing rain and sleet showers in the Hill County. Temperatures throughout Thursday will be in the 30s. Thursday storm bringing soaking rain and limited icing Watson emphasized the importance of residents being prepared for Thursday cold weather. Watson said although the forecast does not look too bad in the Austin area, there is still a chance temperatures and weather conditions could switch up quickly. "Weather could change on a dime so stay prepared and sign up for emergency alert notifications at warncentraltexas.org'" Watson said. Judge Brown said the county is always prepared for one severe cold snap each year. "Everybody should have an emergency plan," Brown said. Six Travis County community centers are open to the public during business hours and can be extended if needed, according to Brown. Austin Energy Deputy General Manager Stewart Riley said Austin Energy is ready to respond to any and all outage reports. Riley said Austin Energy has been preparing year-round. "We have enhanced emergency management capabilities and have supplies on hand for restoration activity," Riley said.
