WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) - Tributes are underway in Washington for former president Jimmy Carter ahead of his state funeral on Thursday. Over the next 24 hours Carter will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol where many Americans will brave the cold to pay their respects to the late president. The flag-draped casket carrying Carter arrived at the Capitol Tuesday afternoon with members of Carter's family followed behind. The 39th president was honored with a 21-gun salute before moving inside the Capitol rotunda for a memorial service.  Vice President Kamala Harris delivered one of the eulogies. "Throughout his life and career, Jimmy Carter retained a fundamental decency and humility,” said Vice President Kamala Harris. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) spoke about Carter's life dedicated to service to the country. "But I rejoice in the thought that he, together with his beloved wife Rosalynn, is now before the face of his father,” said Thune. Johnson added, “Jimmy Carter was a member of the Greatest Generation. He lived through the Great Depression. He did that on a farm in rural Georgia."  Carter's state funeral will take place Thursday at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., all five living presidents are expected to attend.
