Barbara Lee officially launches bid for Oakland mayor

(KRON) -- Former Rep. Barbara Lee is officially running for Oakland mayor. On Wednesday, Lee announced she had entered the race in a post on X and rolled out a campaign website.
"Oaklanders have always overcome challenges by coming together," Lee said in her X post. "At this critical moment, we must not be a city divided, but a community united."
"With the support of Oakland Firefighters, businesses and labor leaders, and community I've made the decision to run for Mayor of Oakland -- to unite our City; make it stronger and safe; and improve opportunity for everyone," she continued.
Daniel Lurie to be sworn in as San Francisco mayor Wednesday
Lee enters the race for mayor following the November recall of former Mayor Sheng Thao. Thao was recalled after less than two years in office amid a significant budget shortfall that has seen the city making cuts to services.
Thao is also connected to an FBI investigation. Although the former mayor has insisted she is not the target of the investigation, FBI agents raided the home she shared with her partner last year.
Former Rep. Lee represented Oakland in Congress since 1998. In 2001, she was notably the sole member of Congress to vote against military action in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.
She chose not to seek reelection last year, instead launching a failed bid for the U.S. Senate seat long held by the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein. Earlier this week, KRON4.com reported that Lee had filed campaign finance paperwork in advance of launching a formal bid for mayor.
