SALINA, Kan. (KSNW) — Emergency crews are fighting to gain ground after more than a foot of snow fell in Saline County over the weekend. Classes are canceled, and Saline has declared a state of disaster. Normally when a storm hits, emergency management can rely on their neighboring counties for assistance. But the weekend storm hit most of the state, and every other county is busy working their own roads. Saline, by itself, isn't prepared to deal with the aftermath, so it's calling on its citizens to help out. Eddie and Velda Creer have lived in Salina for over 30 years but have never been buried like this. "The blizzard while we were having our baby. February 24, 1993," Eddie said. "Yup, but I think this is even worse than that," Velda added. Their car was stuck in the over 12 inches of snow that's taking a toll on Saline County Emergency Management. "We just don't have the resources or manpower to do it, but unfortunately, since everyone else was impacted, we didn't have the luxury of pulling those resources," Director Michelle Weis said. Nearly every plow, truck and tow service is occupied or out of commission. "They have been working 24-hour shifts, they are tired, everyone is cold," Weis said. Emergency Management is stretched thin, so the county is turning to its community. Wichita requires cleared sidewalks, but no deadline except for downtown "We can't do it without them, they couldn't do it without us," Weis said. Emergency Management Public Information Officer Melissa McCoy recalled her neighbor plowing her quarter-mile-long driveway for her that morning. "Reach out to your neighbor, check on your elderly friends and family and make sure they are okay," McCoy said. The people of Salina are pitching in to help those overworked emergency workers by picking up some of the slack. "Yesterday, to get my van, my neighbor walks out with a shovel and says, 'I'll help you dig it out.' So we've seen lots of community." Eddie Creer said. "Yeah, we need to help each other in times like this for sure," Velda said. The couple finally managed to push their car to traction, driving along with the city of Salina toward a path of recovery. "We're going to put it in the driveway and wait until Spring," Eddie said. Once the cost of equipment, manpower and damage hits a certain threshold, that's when a county can declare a state of disaster. It opens up state and federal resources to speed up the journey to complete recovery.
