CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - The U.S. Census Bureau has released annual population estimates for the United States and Puerto Rico, revealing that over the last year, Massachusetts saw its largest annual population spike in 60 years. State program offers winter heating bill relief According to the UMass Donahue Institute's analysis of Census Bureau data, an influx of people was driven into Massachusetts last year for various reasons, but one outranks the others. This population increase of just under 1% is fueled by more than 90,000 immigrants estimated to the state between 2023 and 2024. That's Massachusetts' highest immigration level since at least 1990.  This rapid growth is reflected in the new way the Census Bureau estimates immigration around the country.  "The Census Bureau revised their method to really incorporate data from federal statistical agencies like Homeland Security, etc, who were counting admissions into the U.S.," said Susan Strate from the UMass Donahue Institute. These trends are largely attributed to the Covid-19 pandemic. When restrictions were lifted, movement picked up, both in and out of the state. Although it's difficult to predict what's ahead, Strate stressed since Massachusetts is an aging population, and while we saw more births than deaths this year, that trend may reverse.
