[1] New Mexico Racing Commission investigating All American Futurity race - Four months after the most lucrative quarter horse race in the country was held in Albuquerque, the $3 million purse for the winner still hasn’t been paid. New Mexico Racing Commission Executive Director "Izzy" Trejo says the money is not going to be paid until an investigation is complete. KRQE News 13 has also learned there was concern about how the winning horse was acting after the race. KRQE News 13 also knows the investigation involves blood and urine samples from the horses that are being analyzed at a lab in Colorado. The attorney of the trainer of the winning horse said in a statement that the racing commission has been "non communicative" with the trainers and owners of the horses.
[2] New Mexico fines Cannon Air Force Base over PFAS violations - The state of New Mexico is taking action against an air force base it claims has been releasing dangerous forever chemicals into the environment. The Environmental Department says Cannon AFB released more than seven thousand gallons of toxic firefighting foam wastewater just last year. They say the chemicals, also known as PFAS, threatened groundwater and public health. The base will be required to take swift corrective action, pay a $98,780 fine, and provide a detailed list of all materials at the base contaminated with PFAS, now and in the past.
[3] Snow continues to move into New Mexico through Thursday - A winter storm will continue to bring snow to parts of New Mexico through Thursday. Dangerously cold wind chills will continue into Wednesday morning. More snow will start developing in southern New Mexico Wednesday night, especially along the Mexico border and Texas state line. More snow will develop Thursday afternoon across southern and eastern New Mexico with isolated snow showers in central and northern parts of the state. Widespread snow will continue through Thursday night until the snow begins to wrap up Friday morning.
[4] NMDOH: Overdose deaths declined in New Mexico in 2023 - The New Mexico Department of Health is reporting overdose deaths in the state are dropping. The department says overdose deaths are dropped by 8% since 2021. The department says fentanyl is still the biggest culprit, accounting for 65% of the deaths, followed by methamphetamine. The counties that reported the most deaths last year are Bernalillo, Santa Fe, Rio Arriba and San Miguel.
[5] New Mexico Route 66 Association helps restore 12 neon signs in Tucumcari - The New Mexico Route 66 Association completed the restoration of 12 iconic neon signs in Tucumcari that were damaged by hail in 2023. They say these local businesses are family owned and could not afford repairs. The association covered 50% of the costs. They say it's thanks to thousands of dollars donated by people from across the globe, including as far away as Australia.
