WATCH: Richmond Mayor Danny Avula says it’s unlikely for boil water advisory to be lifted before Friday
Jan 08, 2025
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- In an update on Richmond's water service and the city's water treatment plant, Mayor Danny Avula announced Wednesday morning that he thought it was unlikely that the boil water advisory would be lifted before Friday.
The update came during a press conference held at 9:45 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 8.
"At this point, I think it is unlikely that we will lift the boil water advisory before Friday," Avula said.
As of Wednesday morning, Avula said two of eight pumps at the plant were working and 13 of 20 filters were working. Avula added that the water reservoir was at seven feet at last check, and it's typically at 18 feet.
Avula explained that, so far, some residents have seen partial water pressure return, while others continue to lack water service. Regardless, Avula urges residents who have water service to conserve water so that pressure can continue building in the system.
Avula said that once water service resumes after a period of no water in the system, residents can expect to see sediment and cloudy water first, which will then clear up.
Regardless, Avula said the city remains under a boil water advisory.
According to Avula, plant 1 turned 100 in 2024, adding that the pump issues likely relate to aging infrastructure.
