PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Two people have died in the Eaton fire burning in the Angeles National Forest in the Altadena area of Los Angeles County and Pasadena, California. In a press conference Wednesday, officials said there have been a significant number of injuries and over 100 structures destroyed, just by the Eaton fire alone. There are now a total four life-threatening fires, destroying more than 1,000 structures and burning through thousands of acres. Tens of thousands of people are under evacuation orders as all of the fires remain at zero percent contained. More than 5,000 acres have burned. Many were forced to abandon cars in the neighborhood between Malibu and Santa Monica, prompting fire officials to use a bulldozer to move vehicles that piled up as evacuees became stuck in traffic. With traffic slowing evacuations, and flames jumping the highway, some considered sheltering on the beach. And at a Pasadena care home, workers raced to evacuate elderly residents with a fires inching closer, just a block away. Through it all were the Herculean efforts of firefighters working tirelessly day and night, some answering the call to action, coming in from other areas, battling an unrelenting foe and fighting for every inch and every structure. “The fire is being fueled by combination of strong winds and surrounding topography, which is making it extremely challenging for our personnel that are assigned to this incident,” said Kristin Crowley, Chief of the Los Angeles Fire Department. One of the causes for the fire outbreak in southern California is the incredibly dry conditions during what is supposed to be the rainy season, which typically runs from December through March. ABC6 Stormtracker Meteorologist Kristina Shalhoup has more on what is fueling these wildfire conditions. Categories: News, US & World News
